چکیده

In May, 1956 a conference was held at the New York Academy of Sciences on the subject "Anesthesia and Related Problems." The results of this conference are now presented in a series of 15 papers. On the whole these papers are characterized by an academic and objective approach to many of the clinical problems relating to anesthesia but because of their fundamental nature some of them can also be highly recommended to all those interested in applied respiratory physiology and acid-base balance. The careful analysis of W. A. Spencer of some of the variables affecting pulmonary ventilation is especially interesting, being supported as it is by careful measurements of respiration under various normal and abnormal conditions in the human. J. V. Maloney and J. L. Whittenberger introduce an important concept in the understanding of the mechanical factors involved in the physiological effects of positive pressure respiration during their discussion of pulmonary circulation in the presence of positive pressure, while Roberts and her associates from Cornell provide us with a complete and up-to-date summary on the acid-base changesaccompanying respiratory alkalosis. Roberts' data, while suffering somewhat from an unfortunate transposition of illustrations, describe in detail the metabolic responses to the various stages of respiratory alkalosis and propose a method for making the difficult differential diagnosis between severe endstage respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis. Articles such as these three make this symposium valuable for the advanced student, while with few exceptions the remaining articles consist of fundamental reviews that will prove of value to the nonspecialist. Mercury toxicity

Mercury is a metal found in elemental, organic, and inorganic forms in the nature. This substance is present in the composition of earth crust, soil, air, and even in some tissues of plants and sea animals. Each year nearly 3400 tons of mercury compounds are released in the environment, which 95% settle in the soil, 3% in the oceans, and 2% in the atmosphere. Different industrial products li...

Fish consumption limit for mercury compounds

Background and objectives: Methyl mercury can carry out harmful effects on the reproductive, respiratory, and nervous system of human. Moreover, mercury is known as the most toxic heavy metal in nature. Fish and seafood consumption is the major MeHg exposure route for human. The present study tries to cover researches which have been conducted on mercury levels in 21 species of fish from Persia...

A modified method for the determination of organic mercury in biota [great cormorants (phalacrocorax carbo)] by advanced mercury analyzer

Background: Contagion of aquatic ecosystems to heavy metals especially mercury (Hg) has risen concerns about healthiness of marine organisms. Organic mercury compounds are highly toxic for animals, and its detection in various samples is frequently needed. In present study we have described a new method for measurement of organic mercury and total mercury concentration in great cormorants (ph...

تجمع جیوه در مو و ناخن انسان: آمالگام دندانی به عنوان فاکتور اصلی مواجهه

Background: Dental amalgam, a mixture of approximately 50% mercury with silver, tin, zinc and copper in varying ratios, is a major source of mercury pollution in the general population not occupationally exposed. The toxicity of mercury is enhanced because it is so readily absorbed, with around 90-100% of mercury vapor being absorbed through the oral mucosa. The aim of the current study is to e...
